Dear 阿伯,
When I was very young, I remember you as the Uncle with the beard and mustache. When you carried me, I remember thinking your face was prickly and I wondered why you liked to have a beard, but I wasn’t afraid of you because you always had a big smile on your face and you always made me laugh.
I always thought you were so fun loving because of the way you were around Aunt Mary. Even though I was only 6 years old, I could tell that you loved and adored Aunt Mary. I remember distinctly when you came to my house in Rossmoor and we were playing in the front yard. David and I were running around and you and Aunt Mary were chasing us and you would smile and hug Aunt Mary as you tried to catch us. You even gave her a kiss on the cheek.
You were very special to me as you were the only Uncle I called 阿伯. You were the oldest brother of so many siblings, and that comes with a lot of responsibility. I know because I’m the oldest, but I only have two younger brothers. I admire that in you. I remember the Saturdays we would go to your house in Beverly Hills. I thought it was just family get togethers , but really it was because it was setup so that each brother’s family took care of Grandma . You however, lived with Grandpa and Grandma and took care of them everyday.
I could go on with more fond memories but I’d like to end by saying thank you for being a more than wonderful uncle to me. You were there when I was young, you were at my college graduation, my wedding, and even when you moved to Taiwan, whenever you came to visit, you were always interested in knowing how I was doing and how my family was. I am so lucky to have you as part of my life. I miss you dearly.
Love your niece, Diana
